It is finally the day of the School Festival, continued from ep 6! Kurumi decides to scrap the Super Sentei skit that they were planning to do in favor of a touching melodrama to draw a bigger crowd to the Seitokai event. Thus begins this week’s meeting on the various tropes used in typical touching anime series that we should all be familiar with. Kurumi starts the ball rolling with a simple 2-liner tale of a mother mouse’s self-sacrifice by giving up the final morsel of cheese so that her child can live on, causing Kurumi to brawl her eyes out at her own story. The basis of her tale is the fact that death cannot be separated from emotional scenes, especially AIR-style. Minatsu dreams of a hot-blooded Ashita no Joe ending, while Mafuyu plays it safe with amnesia in Kimi ga Nozomu Eien. Chizuru is the most original with a drama on Key-kun being indirectly rejected while trying to confess to the girl he loves, and then getting into an accident that causes him to lose his memory. To give it a happy ending, he is married to the girl he loves 60 years later and dies a virgin without ever having kissed the girl, while she is gleeful over his death due to the inheritance.
Compiling everyone’s idea together, the Seitokai came up with a new skit in which Minatsu dies protecting everyone from a grenade; Mafuyu suffers amnesia from shock over her sister’s death and dies after being touched by a man; Kurumi dies from an incurable disease; Chizuru reveals herself to be the culprit behind the deaths, due to her past as an an orphan in a war-zone, and dies from her own poison needles; and the sole survivor Ken dies Romeo-style. Thankfully, they acknowledge that it is a ridiculous script and revert back to the Super Sentei idea.
After the school festival, the Seitokai members have to sort out and return the lost items, which includes a pantsu. Testing his deduction skills, Ken proposes that it must have been left behind by someone who usually does not wear pantsu, and everyone is shocked to see Mafuyu checking underneath her skirt. After that, they share their thoughts and feelings on the conclusion of such a memorable event. As usual, Ken tries to discreetly stay behind to tie up the loose ends and let the girls go home first, but they convince him that they would be happy to remain and clear up the work together.
I love how Seitokai no Ichizon is always examining the various tropes used as plots, with the help of spoofs to other anime series, and the nicovideo reference is awesome. I swear that the teddy bear suit that appeared 7 secs into the episode must be Tomoyo (compare below)! With all the blatant references to Clannad(?), AIR and Endless Eight, and taking into consideration the 9 episodes before this, I sure hope the producers have obtained consent from KyoAni. Kurumi’s tale of the mouse strangely brings back memories of Nagisa’s own skit, though they are different stories in themselves. Sigh, KyoAni is definitely a master at coming up with series that leave a lasting impression.
Some of the saddest series I have watched include Clannad ~After Story~ (Tvtropes: This series/game could wring tears from a stone), 1 Litre no Namida (true story of an incurable disease), and Rurouni Kenshin: Seisouhen (yes, I read the manga, and I know the ending is different, but it still makes me cry). KyoAni’s AIR ending and Makoto arc in Kanon never fail to make me cry, just like Natsume Yuujinchou (ep 2, ep and its sequel (ep 2), or the conclusion of Sai’s arc in Hikaru no Go. Gosh, now I feel like rewatching ARIA. And go watch Makoto Shinkai’s works if you have not done so by now.
