Circle Lenses - Bestellungsstress

NICHTS! Keinen Cent, garnichts.

xoxo Elene

After School Specials Done Wrong

Dear Diary:

Today, in an effort to be more “in tune” with modern anime fandom, I watched all of “School Days” in one sitting.

As a result, I now feel slightly more up-to-date, so desired effect achieved and all that.

Unintended minor side effect: I’m convinced that the world is a bleak and uncaring wasteland devoid of any hope for the future.  It’s not that the characters didn’t get what was coming to them or anything, but woof.

I mean, WOOF.

I need to scrub my brain with something now.

To Aru Kagaku No Railgun 18

*Sigh* Boring side stories are boring. Can we get to a bigger picture here?

I don’t’ have much to say about this episode. It was about Mikoto and Kuroko’s dorm lady and her unrequited love and blah blah blah. Seriously, even the producers didn’t think this story was important enough, they didn’t even give the dorm lady a name! Seriously they make a whole episode about a character who doesn’t even have a name!? What the hell is that? It makes it even worse that I’ve just caught up with the manga story, and I must say the Sisters arc is so good! I wanna see those fights animated! I don’t wanna see nameless characters get stood up by old ladies! Oh well, nothing I complain about will change the fact that we’re not getting the Sisters arc animated (this series anyway). I just hope that the series takes a more serious turn soon.

Oh yeah, one interesting fact about this episode: Not only does Pizza Hut support Lelouch’s rebellion, now they also support Academy Citys espers!
Ah, anime product placement at its finest!

Gundam 00 Season 1[English Dub]

It is the year A.D. 2307. Fossil fuels on Earth have been depleted entirely, with mankind turning to the next available power source: solar energy. During this time, 3 orbital elevators with solar power generation systems are built, each under control by the Union of Solar Energy and Free Nations (formerly United States of America), the Human Reform League (Russia, China and India) and the Advanced European Union. However, not all countries are able to enjoy the benefits of this system, leading to widespread resentment and war. Arising out of the conflict, a mysterious military organization known as Celestial Being appears, dedicated to end all warfare using Mobile Suits called Gundam. This begins the stories of Gundam Meisters (pilots) Setsuna F. Seiei, Lockon Stratos, Allelujah Haptism and Tiera Erde as they are thrown into conflict between the 3 superpowers and the various other factions.

Appleseed: Ex Machina aka Ekusu makina (2007)

A.D. 2133: as the Bioroid-run Olympus (a utopian city governed by humanoid cyborg’s with troublesome emotions like anger and fear removed) invites the rest of the world to join with its satellite network to usher in an era of global peace, something or someone has plans of their own and is mind-controlling cyborgs to get it.

6/10

Once again, as with Appleseed (CG), the strongest scene opens the movie with a notably cool action sequence inside a cathedral sprinkled with neat ideas. The remainder doesn’t make much sense but at least you do know what the heroes are doing and the technical concepts come across clearly. The problem is that the baddie’s plans make no sense at all (SPOILER especially the shooting himself in the head and dying bit) but, as I say, you do know what everyone is doing so you can easily follow events. Technically, this is brilliantly designed (Deunan’s two Prada-designed outfits are impressively eye-catching) and has a lovely look that keeps itself out of the uncanny valley by having a very simple colour style, especially for character faces.

This movie contains a single sexual swear word, mild swear words and violence, brief graphic violence.

Classified 12 by BBFC. Suitable only for persons of 12 years and over.

New genre, new technology

In an older version of my About page, I included “no robots/mecha” as one of the stringent criteria I apply when choosing anime series to follow.

My distrust of mecha-themed titles has not entirely dissipated, but I’ve been sufficiently swayed by positive reviews of a certain recent film to place an order for it on Amazon.com.

Incidentally, this will be my very first Blu-ray acquisition.

The disc is scheduled for release on 9th March. That leaves me one month in which to buy a player that can actually read it.
