Why Sentai Filmworks is my favorite region 1 anime company.

Ever since ADV lost all their Sojitz titles, my respect for them have gone up ten folds. They’ve managed to get back on their feet after hitting rock bottom, which a lot of other anime companies who faced similar problems simply closed down for good. They’ve also been correcting their past mistakes like how they used to strip the extras off their thinpack releases and so on. But as you know, ADV eventually closed down and became Sentai Filmworks.

What I really like about Sentai Filmworks is how they’ve been managing to license many titles lately and getting street dates for said titles months after their acquisition announcements. The latest example being To Love Ru which was announced today and already has part 1 scheduled for a December release. I also love the fact that they’ve been focusing on picking up a lot of niche titles. Stuff like Blue Drop, Indian Summer, etc. were shows I’d never expect to see get released in North America and yet Sentai Filmworks has managed to do just that. And the fact that their dvds are some of the lowest priced anime in the market is the icing on the cake.

Although it isn’t to say that Sentai Filmworks doesn’t suffer from it’s share of problems. Probably the most notable example is the constant lack of spell checking on their translations. Every release I’ve bought from them has had spelling errors in their translations, probably more common than with other region 1 anime companies. Some fans also don’t like the fact that Sentai Filmworks is releasing their titles subbed only. And a lot (not all) of their titles are just getting bare bones treatment (lack of extras) but to be fair a lot of companies have been going this route so I can’t fault Sentai Filmworks too much for it.

Overall I welcome Sentai Filmworks current strategy. If what they’re doing means getting more anime into the market and at really cheap prices then I’m all for it.

Dream SABER

Here’s another post about expensive purchases while I was in Akihabara. Saber as most readers know is from Fate/stay night. For those readers that don’t know much about Saber’s background, here’s a quick review. She is the main character in Fate Stay Night, a Japanese visual novel with interactive elements and Fate hollow ataraxia is the second installment to the series.

Personally, I have never actually read any of the visual novels and wasn’t really into the series. However, during my 2005 trip to Hong Kong I saw a Saber statue with a really dynamic pose and I thought the armor dress design was just awesome! Even though Saber’s armor dress is really cool looking I have never bought any Saber merchandise…. until now! When I went into Volks’ Akihabara branch (at least I think it was) I saw a giant Saber doll on display and I said to myself “I must have that no matter the cost”.

I tried asking the staff if that doll was for sale but the staff instead showed me doll parts.  Actaully, I didn’t understand a word she said since I don’t understand Japanese at all. As she was showing me the doll parts I suddenly remember watching a video years ago about a company that would make custom dolls and have a fancy ceramony when the doll was built and pickedup by the cusotmer. I remember the whole process was complicated so I went back to my hotel and did some research first. After my research it turns out that Saber was part of the Dollfie Dream series and not one of those Super Dollfie that you can have built at Volks’  Tenshi no Sato museum. I was quite sad to find out Saber was only sold at a doll convention held at Tokyo’s Big Sight and Volks USA had a lottery system for purchasing on their website both of which I missed. Luckily, I was able to find a Saber at Mandrake’s Akihabara branch and unluckily I had to pay a crazy premium on it since I couldn’t get it anywhere else at the time.

When I got back home from Tokyo I ordered a doll stand and today I finally recieved that doll stand so it’s time to put Saber together! The doll box measures about 29 x 9 x 6 inchs. Saber comes with twelve pieces of armor, five pieces of clothing, a sword, a wig, and two sets of hands. It took me well over thirty minutes just to put her clothes on and to gear her up took another 20 minutes since I have no experience dressing up a Dollfie doll or any doll for that matter ^_^”.

Bleach: Fade to Black en español

El pasado de Rukia que ahora es revelado.  La “verdad” que está encerrada dentro del recuerdo de la oscuridad.

Alguien con un objeto parecido a una hoz ha atacado a Mayuri Kurotsuchi, quien estaba en su laboratorio. Mayuri, quien de repente perdió el control, golpeó su tablero de control de su laboratorio. Entonces, de pronto el Sereitei estaba cubierto por una nube de reishi y atrapó a los shinigamis dentro de una fortaleza. Cuando Kenpachi Zaraki entra corriendo al laboratorio de Mayuri hubo una enorme explosión de reishi que destruyó al Seireitei.

Observando la destrucción del Seireitei desde lejos, una sombra aparece frente a Rukia quien estaba impresionada por el repentino incidente. La hoz se dirige hacia ella y algo en Rukia desaparece.

Al mismo tiempo Ichigo Kurosaki siente peligro y va hacia la tienda de Urahara. Ahí escucha a Urahara sobre “la aniquilación del Seireitei” y se dirige a la Sociedad de Almas junto a Kon.

Cuando Ichigo llega al agonizante Seireitei, es recibido por Renji Abarai y los otros, que parecen haberse olvidado de él. Pero no sólo de él, sus recuerdos sobre Rukia parecen haberse perdido también. Sin pensarlo, Ichigo revela su forma hollow frente a los shinigamis y es acusado como el culpable que destruyó el Seireitei.

¿Qué le pasó a la Sociedad de Almas?

¿Cuál es la identidad de esas dos sombras misteriosas?

¿A dónde fue Rukia?

La batalla solitaria de Ichigo comienza ahora.

Ostatnio można zaobserwować dość powszechne zjawisko pogarszania się jakości emitowanych anime. Coraz więcej tytułów nadawanych jest w kiczowatej jakości – a nawet niektóre zostają zdegradowane do “jakości SD” czy nawet gorszej.
Nie wiem co jest tego przyczyną, mogę jedynie zgadywać, że to jakaś forma oszczędności albo chwyt marketingowy, by zwiększyć sprzedaż płyt Blu-Ray.

Wiem – ze znanych mi źródeł – że z tego sezonu, jak na razie, w HD lub czymś zbliżonym do tego są nadawane:
- Nyan Koi!
- To Aru Kagaku no Railgun

W miarę możliwości i czasu, będę starał się uzupełniać tę listę…
