Ookamikakushi Episode 01

Isuzu’s a grade-A creeper. I mean, legitly. If I acted that way toward any of the guys at my school, I’d get the cops called on me.

Ookamikakushi is surprisingly different from its Higurashi roots so far, and that’s both a good and a bad thing. The good is that the plot isn’t exactly the same; the protagonist, Hiro, is new to his school and town, but he’s not sucked into a club (yet) and he’s not surrounded by loonies.

Except for Isuzu. She’s insane. The others aren’t, so far, although Nemuru gives off potential Rena vibes. Sigh.

The imouto-chan, Mana, is absolutely adorable, but other than that the characters are pretty dull. Some would call them watered-down versions of certain Higurashi characters, but I just find them… lame. There’s no good chemistry between the characters so far, like there was in Higurashi.

Usually the characters are what determine if I really like a series or not, so this is bad news for Ookamikakushi so far. However, there’s potential in the mysterious masked chick and the bizarre transformation of one of Hiro’s classmates. I kinda doubt it can reach the level of complexity of Higurashi or Umineko, but who says that’s a bad thing? Umineko was pretty much a mindscrew, after all. (A good mindscrew, but really, did we really need to see so many effed-up corpses over the course of 26 episodes?)

Of course, it wouldn’t really be fair to constantly compare Ookamikakushi to Ryukishi07’s previous works… would it? I guess now that I’ve compared and contrasted the concepts and characters to death, I’ll probably be able to enjoy it best if I don’t expect it to live up to Higurashi.

… Okay, I hereby swear to stop comparing Ookamikakushi to Higurashi and Umineko in future reviews. Partly for y’all’s sanity, partly ’cause I suspect every other blogger will be analyzing and comparing this poor thing to death.

Anyway, Ookamikakushi is going on my watchlist, for now, if only because of the beginning of the episode – that was attention-grabbing stuff, despite the rest of the episode’s problems. Let’s just hope Mana-chan rises to a supreme level of cuteness that pwns Isuzu’s fail, yes? And maybe Nemuru’s prominence in the opening sequence is a sign that she’ll be awesome, too.
