Disclaimer: All references to extreme violence/rape/swearing are all tongue in cheek but will still probably offend overly sensitive readers.
Detroit Metal City, or DMC, is an anime based on the death metal manga of the same name. DMC was released in the middle of 2008. I only caught it towards the end of 2009, and despite it being one of my favourite shows, here I am only blogging about it in early 2010.
DMC is an anime based on the manga by Kiminori Wakasugi. The story follows Soichi Negishi, a gentle fan of Japanese and Swedish pop, who moves to the city with dreams of breaking into the pop industry.
However, dreams don’t put food on the table, and Negishi somehow finds himself playing the role of Johannes Krauser II, the lead singer for DMC, a death metal band. It is rumoured that when Krauser was born, he sensed the evil inside himself and asked the doctor to end his existence. The doctor failed and shortly after Krauser raped and killed his own parents. The role of Johannes is at complete odds with Negishi’s kind nature, but despite his numerous attempts to leave the band and pursue a pop career, Negishi always finds himself being drawn back in.
I often complain that the anime industry hasn’t done anything decent since Tengen Toppa and Dennou Coil in 2007. DMC is without a doubt the best anime show of 2008. DMC pulls no punches, while not taking itself at all seriously. This is one of those anime shows where the quality of the animation isn’t that important, since you will find yourself drawn into the world of DMC. If I do have one minor complaint, it’s that it’s very short. The entire season is only 12 episodes, which are 13 minutes each. On one hand, I really wanted more, but on the other hand, at least they kept it short and sweet. Again, I cannot emphasize how DMC is definitely not for anyone of a conservative nature, with it’s numerous references to rape, extremely foul language and sadomasochism. Anyone else who can keep an open mind will find it incredibly funny.
