Costume: "Freyr" Source: Anime Show "Detective Loki"

This costume was made for my friend Devon for Anime Expo 2006. I used nylon/polyester fabric for the main body of the costume, trimming it in gray cotton bias binding. The cape is cotton the bottom design is appliqued on the main piece. Unfortunately I was rushing and didn’t get pictures of the process. But you can see how it looked on Devon compared to the picture of the character.

The color difference in the charters outfit in the pictures was Devon’s choice of fabric. This picture of the Character is not 100% accurate but it was the closest we could find. The actual color of the character’s main outfit fabric is more like the color Devon is wearing.

Durarara!! - 08

These two make such an adorable couple ^_^

This week narration duties are back to Celty (think I’ll settle on this spelling now :P ) and the major theme of the episode is searching for lost things.

The episode starts with Celty having a nightmare that reflects her concerns that she will never be reunited with her head.  Feeling slightly depressed she asks Shinra about the nature of dreaming and memories and of course he goes off on a science tangent.  Celty reflects that what she feels for Shinra is probably love – she doesn’t clarify if its romantic love or familial love though.  Shinra is in hyperactive mode as Celty has a very rare day off and he wants to go do something special; however Celty says she wants to stay in and cook for Shinra to show her appreciation for him – he’s delighted :D

Over at the high school, Masaomi is sorting Mikado out with stuff Mikado managed to leave at home when he overslept that morning – Masaomi is such a good friend :)

While at the same time Dota-chin is staking out Yagiri Pharmaceutical, even though he promised the rest of his group to let the matter lie.  He gives up when nothing seems to be happening and heads off.

Just as Dota-chin leaves the area a young man arrives on the scene and attacks the facility suicide bomber style with a heap of fireworks strapped to his body :|

Back home with Shinra and Celty, Celty is cooking (although Shinra has to remind her to use normal kitchen knives rather than her own summoned ones :P ).  Unfortunately Celty’s cooking is……..unique – well she does lack a head and therefore has no sense of taste!  Shinra insists that its wonderful, but the tears streaming down his face give him away    Celty is so fecking cute as she panics and insists that he not eat a single bite more – Shinra attempts to plough on regardless, but Celty uses her abilities to seal the meal in a floating black ball!

The conversation turns to Celty’s memories as she’s still bothered by her nightmare.  Shinra is sweet, but manages to say the wrong thing when he tells her that she may not need her memories (or head).  Celty gets upset and storms off leaving Shinra alone and a touch depressed that he upset her so much.

Meanwhile in town Erika is looking for Walker so they can head off to some event, she meets a blonde girl wandering the streets with a notebook and sign offering to look for things people have lost – or Erika scribbles down a message for Walker.

Walker is searching for his mobile phone, which he seems to have left in a Maid Cafe – he asks Simon if he’s seen Erika…….Simon says no despite the fact he was chatting with Erika not long before hand

The two do manage to meet up later on though – they also make a cute couple :D

In another area of town Celty has met Shizuo outside a vacant lot and the two have a chat.  Seems that these two both have similar coping methods – Shizuo turns to Celty and Celty turns to Shizuo when either of them are upset.

Feeling better Celty goes home, only to find the apartment empty – Shinra has been called out on a job.  This isn’t unusual but Celty has a weird feeling that this job is different and head out to find Shinra.

Shinra’s job is in Yagiri Pharmaceuticals and its to tend to the young man who attacked the facility with fireworks.  Seems he claimed that his girlfriend was abducted by the facility and returned a changed person – the man from Yagiri Pharmaceuticals says that it’s all nonsense, but wants Shinra to wipe the man’s memory anyway.  Shinra says that it’s not that easy to tamper with memories.

Meanwhile after school, Mikado, Masaomi and Anri meet outside the shoelockers – seems Anri is still being bullied and someone has hidden her shoes.  Masaomi takes off saying he has an idea who’s behind this and Mikado helps Anri search the school.  Anri gives up shortly after and goes home, but Mikado continues to search, eventually finding the shoes outside in the spots field.

Back out in town, Celty meets Shinra when he’s on his way back from work.  He asks her to accompany him to dinner because its lonely to eat alone :(

They head to the Russian Sushi place, only to find that because the owner missed his fish delivery the sushi on offer is…….a bit unique.  Shinra eats it anyway and finds that desert is fortune cookies.  Celty is delighted with her, which is about finding lost things; Shinra’s on the other hand is ‘unrequited love’ which he eats to avoid Celty seeing it…awwwww~ poor Shinra!

In another area Mikado is delivering Anri’s shoes, but all he gets for his effort is a muttered ‘thank-you’ and the door closed in his face…….I do feel sorry for him, Anri is a bit socially inept.

Mikado also meets the blonde lady with her sign and flicks through the notebook to see what people in town have been looking for.  He makes his own addition too – ‘connections’.  That was quite poignant, Mikado really is lost in Ikekuburo and all he wants is to make some lasting friendships to anchor him; a simple wish but one that’s proving difficult to fulfill it seems.  I’m looking forward to when Mikado gets his own episode, we’ve already seen how straightforward and pure he is in Masaomi’s episode, I’m interested in hearing Mikado’s own thought processes now.

Finally we cut to Seiji and Scar-girl, who it turns out has no memories.  In a similar parallel to Shinra, Seiji tells scar-girl that she’s fine as she is and that he isn’t interested in her past.  Then there’s the bombshell moment when he calls her ‘Celty’   Another Celty!?

Back at home Celty (the headless one) places her fortune under her pillow and for the first time in ages dreams of when she was whole.  Cue vaguely irish music and a scene of Celty in a beautiful green forest.  Then we see her head’s face for the first time – the same face as the Scared girl with Seiji!   So we were right – Scar-girl does have Celty’s head, but this then raises the question of who’s head is in the tank and whose body the head is on?  My guess is that is that missing stalker friend of Anri’s.

Thoughts: Mainly a slice of life episode, with the overarching theme of searching for lost items.  The major plot revelation of Celty’s heads location was left to the very end.  In spite of this I enjoyed the episode, Celty got a lot of development here – even more than she got in the Shinra episode.  Her personality is adorable, I’ve said it before but Miyuki Sawashiro really does a fantastic job voicing her.  Shinra was cute in this episode too – he can be a bit creepy sometimes, but in this episode he was just cute – he really does love Celty and I’m pleased that Celty does care for him too on some level……they’re a strangely adorable couple

The other bit of the episode concerning Anri’s stolen shoes wasnt as entertaining, but did have some interesting tidbits.  I’m wondering just what Masaomi went to do when he left Anri and Mikado to the search – Anri says that his reaction ‘wasnt the usual Kido-kun’ so I’m thinking maybe this has something to do with how Masaomi was involved with Izaya in the past.  Anri herself is a strange girl – quiet and reserved to a fault, nevertheless she can be quite hurtful with her attitude to Mikado who’s only trying to help her and get to know her better.  Looking forward to more development of these three.

However next week looks like it’s the turn of Seiji’s sister in the narrators chair, so maybe we’ll be getting more info on what Yagiri Pharmacuticals are up to and how Scar-girl ended up with Celty’s head!

Initial D-S

…with a S for sugar.

I have been dabbling a bit with the idea of a dessert shop as some of you might know if you are a close friend and I was not embarassed to let you know that I love making and eating sweet stuff. Annnnd, at the same time, I was thinking about my other two passions, cars/driving and animes/manga. Combining those last two interests together usually brings forth the well-known anime Initial D.

If you don’t know about Initial D, then most likely you are not like me and would actually appreciate a true and proper storyline in any animated series instead of talk and action surrounding the topic of driving, (illegal) racing and cars. For those uninitiated with this series, the protagonist, Takumi,  is the son of a local tofu makerwho delivers tofu for his father across the peak of mountains Akina. After years of delivering the tofu, he realises that he is a natural at a form of racing called drifting. Oh did I mention that he makes tackling 100+ S-bends in a row look as easy as tackling an innocent cute bunny?

Actually, I’d say tackling an innocent cute bunny would be harder. Dang conscience!

Now, to my main point. Does the idea of a wild young boy driving his rusty old screaming Camry through the Mount Akina (or Sydney streets) to deliver handcrafted sugary and sweet desserts sound… more inspiring? At least a bit more interesting then tofu delivery? Just a biiiit more? Well I certainly do!

No matter. If spinach gave Popeye brawn and tofu gave Takumi speed (and no sense of life and death), then desserts and sugar will give me both brain and a sweet-tooth…and eventually a large medical bill.

So, what do YOU think about a delivery service for handcrafted desserts? They have them for pizza and the desserts that pizza-makers sell with them so why not desserts by themselves? They even deliver fresh dairy milk to your door and even dieting pre-made food, so why not something to tickle your taste buds?

Please leave your thoughts as comments in the section below :D

Durarara!! 4

Ehh, Celty’s got a seiyuu? Well, it wouldn’t make sense for her not to have one… And she sounds kinda like Horo…

I’m loving the smoke effects from Celty’s neck. :D

Hoh~ So some old man has Celty’s head? Had rather, if he lost it.

Celty’s armor has been made more feminine… Somehow, I find it amusing.

Never used her head to think, huh? That’s interesting. Also, I am totally loving listening to Jun Fukuyama’s voice. XD

Interesting how both Izaya and Shizuo are helping Celty… And I’m also loving Daisuke Ono’s voice. XD

Tha man who said she doesn’t need a head… Shinra?

Well! That was fun. Durarara is just pure enjoyment to watch. Jun Fukuyama’s voice is just… *sigh* There’s no other like it. :D DD

So, is the next ep going to be a continuation of episode 3? And if it’s narrated by Kida-kun, yay! Miyano Mamoru is up there as one of my favs. Dang, most of my favorite seiyuu are here! XD All that’s missing is Daisuke Namikawa! XD

Turn Back the Clocks and Enjoy the View

Maybe we could create a massive enough body to curve space-time. Just not in my backyard.

“He walked along quietly and sedately, without hurry, to avoid awakening suspicion. He scarcely looked at the passers-by, tried to escape looking at their faces at all, and to be as little noticeable as possible. Suddenly he thought of his hat. ‘Good heavens! I had the money the day before yesterday and did not get a cap to wear instead!’”

This is not rock music.

what i was forced to watch this week #67: maze

Man, Maze is SO ’90s. First, the character designs:

Next, the cast: Kotono Mitsuishi, Sakura Tange, Tomokazu Seki…it’s like the only person that they’re missing is Megumi Hayashibara.

And finally, that final characteristic of 90’s anime: it doesn’t make a whole lot of sense. There’s a whole load of stuff thrown together. Without checking out the source material, I can’t tell if this is inherent in the light novels or is just another instance of not being a particularly elegant way of turning a whole bunch of separate novels into a single anime.

Now, there’s a whole lot of stuff thrown together in a well, whole lot of different ways. There’s the way that they toss in some mecha, some random sex comedy, and so on. There’s the way that the show starts bouncing between worlds and timelines in a way that’s confusing, but not in the “wait, why are we here?” way rather than some interesting time loop story arc or something. Finally, there’s the whole “Why is Milli naked when she’s inside that robot thing” way.

So while the show is pretty bad, it does have a saving grace: fetishes. Do you like…Sakura Tange-voiced young girls? (And FYI, Wikipedia says that the light novel does her one better by making her a dickgirl). Do you like…genderbending? Do you like…wincest? Do you like…yuri? Do you like…whatever the hell it’s called when there’s both a male you and female you and those are in love with each other? Do you like…being reminded of that weird-ass talent every time you hear the name “Gorgeous”? Ok, maybe I’m the only person that thought that.

Finally, it’s kind of a shame that Maze’s invention of “onee-nii-sama” never became some kind of official slang for traps or genderbender characters. Also, half the time that I heard it I laughed because it sounded more like Milli was saying “onani-sama”.

Would I watch it even if I weren’t forced? The OVA has some of the most inane breast-related dialogue this side of Aki Sora.

Satsugai, satsugai se yo!

Disclaimer: All references to extreme violence/rape/swearing are all tongue in cheek but will still probably offend overly sensitive readers.

Detroit Metal City, or DMC, is an anime based on the death metal manga of the same name. DMC was released in the middle of 2008.  I only caught it towards the end of 2009, and despite it being one of my favourite shows, here I am only blogging about it in early 2010.

DMC is an anime based on the manga by Kiminori Wakasugi. The story follows Soichi Negishi, a gentle fan of Japanese and Swedish pop, who moves to the city with dreams of breaking into the pop industry.

However, dreams don’t put food on the table, and Negishi somehow finds himself playing the role of Johannes Krauser II, the lead singer for DMC, a death metal band. It is rumoured that when Krauser was born, he sensed the evil inside himself and asked the doctor to end his existence. The doctor failed and shortly after Krauser raped and killed his own parents. The role of Johannes is at complete odds with Negishi’s kind nature, but despite his numerous attempts to leave the band and pursue a pop career, Negishi always finds himself being drawn back in.

I often complain that the anime industry hasn’t done anything decent since Tengen Toppa and Dennou Coil in 2007. DMC is without a doubt the best anime show of 2008. DMC pulls no punches, while not taking itself at all seriously. This is one of those anime shows where the quality of the animation isn’t that important, since you will find yourself drawn into the world of DMC. If I do have one minor complaint, it’s that it’s very short. The entire season is only 12 episodes, which are 13 minutes each. On one hand, I really wanted more, but on the other hand, at least they kept it short and sweet. Again, I cannot emphasize how DMC is definitely not for anyone of a conservative nature, with it’s numerous references to rape, extremely foul language and sadomasochism. Anyone else who can keep an open mind will find it incredibly funny.

U-Con @ UCONN

On feb 12, me and a friend  attended U-Con, an anime convention at the University of Connetticut. After a seven hour drive, which involved frequent stops at the various rest stations along the highways of NJ, we made it to the college. Unfortunately, being that it was the last day (our departure was delayed due to that weekend’s snowstorm) not much was going on. However, our efforts were rewarded with the appearance of the Nostalgia Critic himself, Doug Walker, not to mention an added appearance by Santa-Christ (aka Rob Walker). There were still videogames to be played, Cosplay shows to attend, Katamari balls to be tossed around, and engaging discussions to be had (including such insightful topics as the tastyness of donuts and the mysterious disappearance of Miranda Piker). A fun time was had by all.

**What we are watching: Dragon Half**

So, I decided that I needed something light and fluffy to watch in the coming weeks. A heady combination of Blassreiter, Dante’s Inferno and Higurashi has left in laughing maniacally at certain things, garnering strange looks from those around me. To counter act this visual malady I have subjected myself to the first DVD of Pani Poni Dash and am about to start watching this strange little comedy Dragon Half.

And what a strange Anime this is! Dragon Half follows the exploits of Mink, a half dragon half human who is trying to cope with the anxiety of growing up…whilst being a half dragon. I am sure that the video above will be more than enough to show readers exactly what I mean.

Today I will be out and about doing some outdoor photo-shoots, what is special about these photos is that it is not a normal Anime figure but a very nice J-Doll. I look forward to sharing the results with all.

**Watching:Higurashi no Naku Koro ni**

This is pretty much the repercussions of searching for music Valentines music videos, it was by mere chance that I stumbled on Higurashi or “When they cry”. The video I clicked on left its mark, a character laughing maniacally while another character plunged herself neck first onto a kitchen knife…

I opted not to show any kill/deaths in the video in case of spoilers so readers will have to be content with an eerie (yet well done intro) song for the series :3

Higurashi is plugged as a murder mystery, originating from a popular game that has spawned not only an anime but also live action movie, I remain gripped by the possibilities that this series has to offer and will make a change (I hope) from the usual movie diet of action no brainer.

**Figure Pre-Order: Hyakka Ryoran - Senhime

Figure Pre-Order: Hyakka Ryoran - SenhimeI have been raving about this figure since I saw it on Tsuki Boards, Alter’s 4th figure from the Hyakka Ryoran range is a perfect complement to the Yagyu Jubei and Hattori Hanzo. Senhime is sculpted and painted with a naginata and detailed kimono hanging off her shoulders.

"A continuing trend of looking good while kicking the crap out of someone"

She has a very stern looking face (which regular readers know I like ^^) and could be compared in visual style to Kanu Unchou. I have made a point this year of collecting the full range of Hyakka Ryoran figures, but I am already losing that battle by missing out on the Yuki Sanada figure (released before I knew about Hyakka Ryoran), Senhime more than makes up for this.

I have taken a risk with this figure, I have place an early pre-order with a company I have not used before called AmiAmi, they are situated in Japan and offer pre-order discounts (18% in the case of Senhime) . I have not been hit by a shipping cost yet so the true test of how cost efficient this service is, is still to come.
